There are various reasons to explain this –
First of all, basic economics tell us that when the demand is higher than the supply - the price goes up. The holidays brings the BUSIEST shopping season of the year - the demand is HIGHER than any other time during the year! In addition, sometimes products could be difficult to find in certain parts of the country... and those people are willing to pay more to get their hands on something they can't find in their own area.
An item might only be available in certain areas of the world or country. Once I sold a bed canopy from IKEA that retailed for $15. It sold for over $50! Why? It sold to a bidder who didn't have access to the IKEA stores.

The point is that many buyers are hooked on ebay or amazon and don’t shop around… They browse around on these sites, come across something they want and will pay top dollar for it without even thinking to look for the same item elsewhere.
